CAMPANIA

 

- Campania is a region in Southern Italy. It has a population of 5.8 million, making it the second most populated region and, with a total area of 13,595 km², it is the most densely populated region in Italy. Its capital is Naples.

- The name Campania comes from the Latin expression "Campania felix" meaning "fertile countryside".

- In Campania on 3rd October 1839 the first railway line in Italy was opened. It ran from Napoli to Portici.

- Naples is the home of pizza, originally food for the poor, Neapolitan ragù and zeppole.

- Football is a passion in Campania and Napoli's finest period was between 1984 and 1990 when Diego Maradona played for them and they won the Italian Championship twice as wellas the UEFA cup.

- Vesuvius, an active volcano 1279 metres high, is found in Campania. In 79 B.C it erupted, destroying and completely covering Pompeii.
