- Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region in north east Italy with around 1.2 million inhabitants. Its capital is Trieste. |

- Friuli Venezia Giulia is named after the Roman city of “Forum Iulii” (Julius' forum),which is now Cividale. |
- The region is known for its high quality white wines in a wine-producing tradition which had already begun before the arrival of the Romans 2000 years ago.

- The author Italo Svevo and the poet Umberto Saba were born in Trieste and Irish author James Joyce lived there for a time.

- Trieste was part of Austria and the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1382 to 1918. From 1947 to 1954 it was an independent state, after which it became part of Italy.

- The Alps covers half of the region and the highest mountain is Mount Coglians which is 2,780 metres high.
