- The name is a shortening of “Ai piedi del monte” meaning “At the base of the mountain” and indeed the Alps and the Apennine Mountains cover more than 40 % of the region. |
- The Residences of the Royal House of Savoy and the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. |
- In Turin we can find the Mole Antonelliana, the symbol of the city and, at 167.5 metres, it is the tallest museum in the world (it houses the National Museum of cinema). |
- Vercelli is the Rice Capital of Europe and much of the agriculture of Piedmont is dedicated to the production of rice. |
- The giant car manufacturer Fiat was founded in Turin. The name FIAT means Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Italian Automobile Factory of Turin).
